As promised, the Public School System Athletic Department will bring back interscholastic sports competitions after tournaments were suspended late last year due to Super Typhoon Yutu.
The 4×4 grass volleyball tournament for middle school boys and girls will kick off the series of sports events this season, according to PSS Athletic Department director Nick Gross. The contest will be held on two weekends with the first one scheduled for Feb. 9 and the participating teams play in a round-robin format. The Top 2 teams from each school will then advance to the playoffs set for Feb. 23 and will have a single-elimination format. Gross is proposing to have the Oleai Sports Complex Field as venue for the grass volleyball event.
Also set for Feb. 23 is the pool play for the elementary co-ed 4×4 basketball tournament. The Top 2 teams will compete in the single-elimination playoffs on March 2 and Gross is hoping to utilize the Marianas High School Gymnasium for the basketball matches.
The high school (boys and girls) 3×3 basketball will have its pool play earlier—Feb. 16—and the championship round will take place on March 2.
The outrigger canoe races are also for high school students and will be held at Kilili Beach. The sprints events will take place on April 6 and 20, while the long distance race is scheduled for May 4. The double-point championship round is slated for May 18.
As for the track and field events, PSS will be coordinating with Northern Marianas Athletics in pushing for the proposed schedules.
The track season will kick off on March 18, which will be for qualifying events in the elementary division (Saipan). The first set of qualifiers will run until March 23. Another leg for the elementary division is tentatively slated from March 25 to 29, while the high school and middle school will have their first qualifier on March 30. More qualifying events are eyed in April, while the actual competition for elementary is set for May 3 and 4, and May 10 and 11 are for middle and high school.
