Inos assisting CHCC on finances

Gov. Eloy S. Inos has put together a team that is working with the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. to help resolve some of the longstanding financial issues of the CNMI’s sole public hospital.

Inos said that he and a team are looking over the corporation’s financial situation for the past two weeks now.

“We put together a team from the Executive Branch to collaborate with the fiscal folks at CHCC in hopes to pin down any issues pertaining to their financial status, cash flow, billing and collections and so forth and only then we can come out and put out a plan to assist them,” Inos said.

So far, CHCC is still paying its current bills—not past arrears—with the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. It just recently paid its August billing.

The hospital is also looking into federal funding and, in fact, recently received two grant funds.

According to Community Guidance Center director Reyna Saures, the first is a Systems of Care Planning grant and is about $700,000.

From that amount, Saures said they are able to do some assessment, have stakeholder meetings, and develop a strategic plan to be implemented.

The corporation hopes that the one-year grant will lead to a three-year implementation grant, supposedly up to $8 million.

Saures said the second federal funding is a Partnership for Success grant, which is $1.3 million each year and will continue up to five years. It is intended to build community prevention programs, and evidence-based programs.

Both grants are from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration.
