Independent Guahan to launch new village outreach campaign
GUAM—In their continuing efforts to educate the island community about decolonization, Independent Guahan will be holding their monthly general assembly at the Chalan Pago Community Center on Thursday, April 27, from 6pm to 7:30pm. This month’s assembly represents a new initiative by the group to bring informational resources and critical conversations about independence as a political status option directly into the island’s villages.
Since August of last year, Independent Guahan has been holding monthly general assembly meetings in the main pavilion of the Chamorro Village. This month’s meeting in Chalan Pago represents a new phase of educational outreach, where each monthly assembly will move to a new village. Jessy Gogue, Mayor of Ordot-Chalan Pago, is working closely with Independent Guahan to invite village residents to attend the meeting and learn more about political status change.
The educational focus for this month’s meeting is “Independence 101” or a basic overview of what possibilities lay in the future should Guam become an independent country, as well as a discussion about some of the basic misconceptions about independence as a political status.
At each general assembly, a Maga’taotao or community hero is chosen to be honored. For the April assembly, Ben and Susie Arceo, World War II survivors and prominent residents of Ordot-Chalan Pågo will be honored for their work in promoting and protecting the heritage of the Chamorro people.
Starting with this meeting, Independent Guahan general assemblies will now be held on the last Thursday of each month.
