With the COVID-19 pandemic, most people would rather stay home and keep safe and because of this, many have picked up gardening. According to Kiara’s Garden owner and gardener Dhez Javier, one does not need a big lot or any lot at all to start this hobby.

“Orchids are the best plants to have whether you have a garden or not because some of them can be planted outside while some can be in a pot inside the house. Orchids have been the bestsellers at the shop that is why I have been replenishing our supply… The flowers will last for at least two months and then they keep on blooming all year round,” she said.

“We have just received our orchids that came from Hawaii and there is a good variety of them— rama, dendrodium, miltonia, cymbidium, and oncidium. The demand for orchids on island is high and we have to import because it’s not available here…our prices start at $18 and up,” she added.

Kiara’s Garden moved from San Antonio to a bigger area beside Tenda Market in Koblerville.

Now at their new location beside Tenda Market in Koblerville, Kiara’s Garden has more space for her growing plant inventory. “We moved here in July from San Antonio and we have a better and bigger space. I love it because we have many butterflies that come and enjoy the flowers,” Javier said.

“Our former location is used for propagating and when all the plants are healthy and ready, we transfer it here… Aside from orchids, we ship unique succulents from California and we have a lot of variety of plants that can be placed indoors and outdoors,” Javier added.

According to Javier gardening can be more than an interest as it can be a way of life. “Once you are in too deep caring for your plants—extracting, repotting, or trimming—sometimes you will lose track of time because it is very relaxing and you don’t need many or sophisticated tools. I am glad that people are continuing or picking up this hobby especially during this pandemic,” she said.

“It makes me happy when people send me messages describing how happy they are about this plant purchased from me. Gardening is good for our physical, emotional, and mental well-being as it builds self-esteem and since you feel less stressed tending to your plants, it boosts your immune system,” she added.

Kiara’s Garden in Koblerville is open from Monday to Sunday, 9am-6pm. For more information, call 989-1062 or look them up on Facebook: Kiara’s Garden
