With heavy hearts, Hyatt Regency Saipan says “goodbye” to materials manager Lucy P. Aldan as she retires after 34 years of dedication to the corporation.
More fondly known as Mrs. Lucy, she began her hospitality career part-time as a receiving reports clerk at night while balancing a full-time position as an educator for the Public School System during the day, a wife to a firefighter husband, and, mother of three children. As time passed, Mrs. Lucy realized she enjoyed the hospitality career and made the transition into being a full-time employee of Hyatt Regency Saipan in the purchasing department. She then moved up the corporate ladder from payroll, to human resources, engineering and finally as the materials manager for the hotel where she retires today.
When asked what kept her with Hyatt Regency Saipan for over 34 years, Mrs. Lucy replied, “That’s easy. First let me tell you what it was not. It was not the pay or the benefits—those were the perks I shared with my colleagues. It was the people, the people I encountered every day. I watched how they were so passionate about their work, about the hotel, about the guests, about each other. And I learned. I learned from them, my peers. I found the same passion within me. I grew to share that same passion with my colleagues and it kept me motivated for over 34 years.”
The oldest in existence with a legacy of hospitality, Hyatt Regency Saipan is the only international hotel brand on the island since its establishment on Dec. 1, 1980. With development and progression over many years, the one element most significant to the corporation is its people—the human connection between colleagues, and hotel guests and colleagues. Aldan clearly found a second family with her colleagues—a family that cared for her as she did for them.
When asked to leave a message by which she will be remembered, she took a moment to collect her thoughts and replied, “It would be this: take every opportunity you get. Grow—spiritually, emotionally, mentally and professionally. Hyatt gave me an opportunity way back, and I took it. I made the best of it. Find a good group of colleagues who are genuine like you and who will help you learn from your mistakes. Nothing comes easy in this life but it’s the things that we work for the most that mean the most. I made it work for me, and, that is what I would say to the next generation and those currently in the work force.”
Mrs. Lucy has already planned out the rest of her year – she will catch up on Hawaii 5.0 via Netflix; return to her childhood roots of farming; focus more on her personal health to ensure she is around longer for her six grandchildren; and, especially spend as much time as she can with her mother.
On behalf of your Hyatt Regency Saipan family and with heavy hearts we say “goodbye” to Mrs. Lucy, nevertheless, the memories are with us for a lifetime. Thank you for your dedication and best of luck to you in all your adventures.
