The man who shot his wife with a rifle last weekend has been released after posting bail last Monday in Superior Court.

Norberto Blas Camacho was released after posting bail during a bail hearing last Monday, Dec. 18, at 9am. Assistant attorney general Robert Lee represented the government in the case.

Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho set the preliminary hearing on Dec. 27 at 9am. Camacho has been charged with attempted first degree murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, aggravated assault and battery, and disturbing the peace.

A $500,000 cash bail was originally set for Camacho’s release.

Police detective Vuddy S. Igitol said there is probable cause to believe that last Saturday night, Dec. 16, at 11:23pm, Camacho committed attempted first degree murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, aggravated assault and battery, and disturbing the peace.

The crimes were committed at the suspect’s residence in Kagman.

The Department of Public Safety said police officers Edward Cepeda and Eric Flores responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 11:28pm last Saturday.

While driving to the scene, the officers noticed a shirtless man, standing under a street light along Anonas Drive with a rifle seemingly pointed in their direction.

An off-duty officer, Olympio Muňa, informed Cepeda and Flores the victim was locked inside a residence with a gunshot wound to the leg.

The victim, later identified as Camacho’s wife, Maryann Demapan Camacho, said the couple had been arguing since Dec. 14, and matters escalated after having another argument earlier that evening. Witnesses say they heard at least four gunshots as well as a woman yelling for help, before members inside the home led her to safety. Paramedics transported the victim to the Commonwealth Health Center for treatment at 12:03am, Sunday.

Maryann is now in stable condition.

The gun, later identified as a .410 caliber shotgun, was later procured by crime scene technician Leopoldo Duenas Jr.
