Hurrah for the Pumpkin Pie

“Hurrah for the fun! Is the pudding done? Hurrah for the pumpkin pie”
—excerpt from Lydia M. Child’s poem (1844) Over the River and Through the Wood

If you have never baked from scratch a pumpkin pie
assemble, mix all the fresh ingredients and give it a try
when viewing the final product folks say, Oh my gosh!
did you actually bake that from a hard orange squash?
chop up and boil or steam the insides of a pumpkin
mix the milk and eggs and spices and dump them in
for spices use cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, mace
buy two, carve a scary or funny smile gap toothed face
and while you are carving your orange jack-o-lantern
don’t forget please don’t let that tender pie crust burn
yes, I have two older brothers Michael and Peter
who along with us younger ones are great pie eaters
I had enough pie, next muffins I bake to stuff my gut
I’ll use an oblong tan colored squash called a butternut.
