Housing scarce after typhoon
The strongest storm seen this year made landfall in the Marianas nearly two weeks ago, leaving the CNMI with a huge demand for housing with little to no supply.
Super Typhoon Yutu, a Category 5 typhoon that roared across the islands of Tinian and Saipan on Oct. 24, demolished several homes on the island of Saipan and left hundreds homeless.
Many of these displaced families have been desperately searching for homes but they are finding out that housing is scarce now more than ever.
With so many thousands rendered homeless by Super Typhoon Yutu, it has been particularly difficult for residents to find alternative homes.
In a telephone interview with Northern Marianas Housing Corp. office manager/procurement officer Jacob Muna, he affirmed the lack of alternative homes due to the widespread destruction of Super Typhoon Yutu.
In order to assist individuals who are in search of a homes in this difficult time, NMHC is asking home unit owners and companies to inform the corporation of any available units so that they can pass on the appropriate information to individuals who inquire about available housing.
As of now, Muña said that the corporation is limited to the help they can give in terms of housing because the waiting lists for their housing programs have been closed for months due to maximum capacity.
The corporation is now looking at partnering with housing unit owners to inform Yutu victims of any available homes.
In a public notice received from the corporation, the NMHC is seeking information on available rental housing units on both Saipan and Tinian.
The unit may be a single house dwelling or apartment unit.
The NMHC will be disseminating the information to the community on available rental housing units.
The vendor, company, or landlord is required to provide information such as company name, contact number, email address, number of bedrooms, number of available units, and amenities provided.
For any questions or concerns, Muna can be contacted 234-6866/9447 or 483-9447, you may also email him at officemanager@nmhcgov.net.
