House resolution honors Chamorro, Carolinian cultures
In observance of Cultural Heritage Month in September, the House of Representatives adopted a resolution giving special recognition to the CNMI’s two distinct and unique cultural heritage: Chamorro and Carolinian.
“Each distinct culture defines who the indigenous people of the Northern Mariana Islands are and is deeply rooted, valued, and treasured,” House Resolution 18-61, authored by Rep. Felicidad Ogumoro (R-Saipan), reads.
Every September, the CNMI observes Cultural Heritage Month, providing a framework for cultural activities, a time to display the unique and attractive aspects of these respective and valuable cultures, and to strengthen, preserve, and ensure they are passed on to future generations.
Among these events is a day set aside to honor Chief Aghurubw on Sept. 27, and all traditional chiefs, magalahis and samwools. Every year, the community celebrates Chief Aghurubw Day on Managaha Island, also a tourism gem.
Another one is a moment of silence in honor of the 13 fishermen who perished at sea in September 1986. A 13 Fishermen Monument along Beach Road in Garapan was built in their honor.
The use of traditional attire is also encouraged during Cultural Heritage Month.
