Hotel under construction on Tinian

A hotel that is currently being built on Tinian is being looked at as a means to somehow address the lack of rooms on the island, with two construction projects set to start next month as part of the divert airfield lease.

The divert airfield refers to the U.S. Department of Defense’s plan to build an alternative landing airfield on Tinian in case the U.S. Anderson Airbase in Guam is unavailable due to wars or calamities.

Commonwealth Ports Authority board chair Kimberlyn King-Hinds said in a recent interview that her understanding is that the construction of the 125-room hotel is well underway on Tinian.

“We’re kind of hoping that it will address some of that issue,” said King-Hinds, referring to lack of hotel rooms on the island.

She said she does not know the official name of the hotel but that it’s located between Kammer Beach and Taga Beach in San Jose, Tinian.

“I walked there recently. …They’re in full construction mode,” she said, adding that modular units are being constructed, so it’s faster to put it together. “You would basically use cement and cinder blocks,” she said.

Last August, it was reported that the Tinian Hairui Real Estate Co. LLC is proposing to build and operate the $3-million three-story, 138-room Xingsha Hotel along 8th Avenue and Kammer Beach.

Tinian Mayor Edwin Aldan has emphasized the need to have more hotel rooms on the island; right now, Tinian only has 52 rooms for tourists.

CPA expects to start the Marpo Heights 2 road pavement and the Tinian seaport top side improvements this April.

The two projects are part of the divert airfield negotiations and were among the outside-the-fence projects that the CPA board of directors had negotiated with the U.S. Department of Defense.

The 40-year divert airfield lease agreement worth $21.9 million for certain airport and seaport properties on Tinian is expected to spur economic activities on the island as it will directly benefit the people through infrastructure improvement of the Tinian International Airport, public roads, and community facilities.
