The Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands reported 73.67 percent occupancy among 11 member hotels for April 2014, a 2-percent decrease compared to April 2013.

A total of 50,901 of 69,090 available room nights sold in April 2014, compared to 54,498 of 72,060 of available room nights sold over the same period last year. Room rates were $113.35 during the month, compared to $103.07 last April.

“Last year, HANMI supported a 50-percent increase in the hotel occupancy tax with the assurance of the government that it would go toward marketing and destination enhancement,” said HANMI vice chair Gloria Cavanagh. “As shown by April’s dip in occupancy rates, the visitor industry is very sensitive, and we strongly feel it is imperative to ensure that funding stays enact so the Marianas Visitors Authority can continue its work of attracting visitors. In the end, the government and the people benefit.”

So far this calendar year, hotel occupancy is at an average 87.26 percent, 1 percent lower than last year.
