The Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. showed off Friday its brand new electric beds to Gov. Eloy S. Inos and lawmakers at the Commonwealth Health Center.

Aside from Inos, Reps. Roman Benavente (Ind-Saipan), Lorenzo Deleon Guerrero (Ind-Saipan), and Edmund Villagomez (Ind-Saipan) joined CHCC board chair Jack Torres in the presentation.

Hospital CEO Esther Muña thanked Inos and the 18th Legislature for the local appropriation that made the purchase possible. She also extended her gratitude to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Delegate Gregorio Kilili Camacho C. Sablan (Ind-MP) who also contributed in the acquisition of the new equipment.

Saipan Local Law 18-17 appropriated $250,000 to purchase new beds for CHC. USDA Community Facilities Grant gave an additional $50,000 last year.

“With the total funding of $300,000, we purchased 30 electric hospital beds with mattress, two ICU beds, 10 prevention surface mattresses, and two birthing beds,” Muña said.

She said the new beds are of great value to CHC patients as they are more comfortable, safer, and could better prevent pressure ulcers or bedsores.

“It will also be of value to nurses because it prevents injury to nurses, able to provide less time in maneuvering the patients, and more time on direct patient care,” Muña said.

“The beds that will be replaced have been in the hospital since the hospital opened in 1986. Some of the beds will be donated to patients who are bedridden,” she added.

Contact CHC’s hospital administrator for requests for bed donations.

“Any leftover beds may be donated elsewhere in the Pacific and we will assess the need soon to determine that,” she said.
