Four of the Public School System’s annual awards went to Herbert G. Hopwood Middle School last week after they announced that Ruby DLC Hocog is the 2019 Administrative Staff of the Year.

The announcement was delayed by Super Typhoon Yutu’s devastation in late October 2018.

Hopwood was able to bag the PSS 2019 Instructor of the Year award through Michael Berbes; 2019 Counselor of the Year award through Jillian Pladevega; and tied with the 2019 Teacher Aide of the Year award through Salote Kesol.

Kesol tied with Garapan Elementary School’s Grace Belyea.

Associate education commissioner for Instructional Services Jackie Quitugua represented Education Commissioner Glenn Muña at the awarding since he was on leave at the time.

This is Hocog’s second state Administrator of the Year award. Her first was in 2010.

“I have been with Hopwood for nine years but, with PSS, over 17 years,” she said.

She started her career at Rota’s Sinapalo Elementary School before transferring to Dandan Elementary School.

“I was not expecting this award because I [thought] the award was already done… I was clueless,” she said, adding that she thought it was already awarded to someone else.

“…My boss asked me what I wanted [as a gift],” she said, noting that her colleagues were acting “weird” the day prior to the awarding.

“Truly, these employees deserve [their awards] for their hard work, their resiliency, and passion,” Hopwood principal Dr. Rizalina Liwag said in an interview. “We are very thankful,” she said.

She described Hocog as “very humble, very patient, very hardworking, very resilient, and she has truly shown passion for what she does in school and what she does for [our students]. We are thankful to have an employee who exceeds the expectations of this school and of PSS.”
