Hopwood 1 bagged the first finals ticket after routing San Antonio Middle School in the opening semis match, 70-40, while Chacha advanced to today’s winner-take-all finale following a tough 35-32 victory against Hopwood 2 in the second Final Four pairing.
Khalid Islam lifted Chacha to the close semis win, scoring 13 points, including 3 of the squad’s last 5 markers. Islam also drew enough help from his teammates in the second half to foil an all-Hopwood championship match. Five other Chacha players made it to the board in the final frame, while only three players scored for Hopwood 2 with the third one limited to one free throw.
Christian Itaas led Hopwood 2’s losing cause with his 15 markers.
In the first semis game, Hopwood 1 proved to be too much for San Antonio, as the former had the game in control right in the opening quarter. Hopwood pulled away after the first 20 minutes of play, 41-20.
Jude Tengco paced Hopwood 1 with his 13 points, while Jordan Ocaya chipped in 12. Angelo Factor contributed 8, while four others added 6 markers each for Hopwood 1’s balance offense. Champ Sambangan had 15 to top-score for San Antonio.
The Hopwood 1-Chacha title tiff will be played today at 5pm.
All-Hopwood title duel
Meanwhile, it will be an all-Hopwood affair in the girls championship game.
Hopwood 1 marched into the finals after dominating San Antonio, 37-22, while Hopwood 2 notched a similar easy semis victory against Dandan, 43-27, to ensure the Hilitais a championship trophy in the girls division.
Chevy Kate Alipio starred in Hopwood 1’s rout of San Antonio, as she nearly matched their opponent’s output, firing 19 markers. No San Antonio player broke into double figures with Terri Borja making only 8 markers.
Alipio logged 10 of her total points in the first half to give Hopwood 1 an 18-9 lead. Alipio and company never looked back from thereon.
In the other semis pairing, Samantha Francisco knocked in 22 points to power Hopwood 2 to a 16-point winning margin against Dandan. She dropped 12 markers in the first half, as Hopwood 2 built a commanding 25-8 lead and protected the double-digit spread in the second frame.
The all-Hopwood girls finale is set for 4pm.
