Sen. Jude U. Hofschneider (R-Tinian) is set to introduce a bill to enable the CNMI to participate in the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education’s Professional Student Exchange Program.

Senate Bill No. 19-109 or the “CNMI Professional Student Exchange Program Act of 2016” will enable the CNMI to participate in WICHE’s PSEP which would encourage and enable aspiring students to attend any of 10 western states to enroll in selected out-of-state professional healthcare programs and pay reduced tuition rates. Hofschneider will introduce the bill in the next Senate session.

The CNMI is already currently a member of WICHE that enables graduate and undergraduate students to attend schools and pay discounted or resident tuition rates.

If signed into law, S.B. 19-109 will become the first CNMI legislation which would offer more opportunities for students who want to pursue a professional degree in healthcare fields such as dentistry, medicine, occupational therapy, optometry, osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant, podiatry, and veterinary medicine through WICHE’s Professional Student Exchange Program (PSEP) as determined by the CNMI WICHE commissioners in collaboration with the CNMI Scholarship Office.
