NMI Democratic Party chair Nola K. Hix said Wednesday that the victory of nine of their 18 candidates in the Nov. 3 general elections is a win for the people and called for unity for the good of the CNMI

“Let us all move forward in solidarity for the betterment of our islands,” Hix said.

She also claimed as a win for the party Rota independents Sen. Paul A. Manglona and Rep. Donald Manglona’s declaration Tuesday night as NMI Democrats following the Commonwealth Election Commission’s official declaration of the results of the election.

CEC’s certified election results showed that nine Democratic Party candidates at the Nov. 3 election, with Edith E. Deleon Guerrero winning the Saipan Senate seat and Edwin Kenneth Propst, Celina R. Babauta, Christina Marie Elise Sablan, Denita K. Yangetmai, Vicente Castro Camacho, Sheila Therese Jack Babauta, Leila Haveia Fleming Staffler, and Richard Tudela Lizama making it to the House of Representatives.

Hix said that the CNMI will make history again in 2021, with more women than ever in office. She said they are proud that all of their women ran successful campaigns under their party’s banner. She noted that women made up only 23% of all candidates, but took 26% of all elected positions available.

For the first time in decades, Hix said, not only did the Democratic Party offer a full slate, but they offered candidates that are “credible, connected by their diversity, collaboration, and experience.”

These candidates, she said, were able to put together not just a platform but a pledge to the people of the CNMI that sets them apart from the opposition.

“We’re very proud of our rebirth of a two-party system and several voters have expressed their enthusiasm with the new faces, new voices, and new ideas, all ready to get to work for the people,” Hix said.

She also congratulated Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) on his re-election to the U.S. Congress, along with the senators and House representatives of the incoming 22nd Legislature.

Hix thanked and congratulated the people for their vote of confidence and thanked the independent and Republican Party candidates for their civility throughout the early voting and election day.

For the Republicans, 10 Republican Party candidates won.
