No-hitter lifts Comets I in rout of Comets II

C.J. Cabrera threw a no-hitter to power Comets I to a 10-0 win over Comets II in the Major division of the 2014 Saipan Little League Baseball League last Sunday at the Miguel “Tan Ge” Basa Pangelinan Ballfield.

Cabrera pitched five innings and struck out 12 to hand Comets I its third win in as many games and a share of the Major lead with IT&E, Hustlers, and defending champion Falcons. With Cabrera on the mound, Comets II made it to scoring position only once with Ried Teregeyo walking and stealing second and third. Teregeyo never reached home, as Cabrera struck out the next two batters to end the lopsided match one inning early. The Comets I pitcher also struck out leadoff batter Alvin Hocog.

Besides his outstanding pitching, Cabrera also contributed to the Comets I’s offense, going 2-for-3 and scoring two runs. Vincent Nakamura had two runs, too, and two RBIs on a 2-for-3 stint at the plate. Francisco Frederick was 3-for-3, adding three runs and one RBI. Comets I scored in each of the five innings to whip Comets II.

Hustlers 14, Ol’Aces 4

The Hustlers grabbed a share of the division lead after finishing off the Ol’Aces (1-2) in only four innings.

The Hustlers also had a no-no with Darvin Manalo pitching three innings and Leon Camacho relieving him in the fourth and last inning and still allowing no hits to the Ol’Aces. Manalo had seven strikeouts, while Camacho added two. Though the two Hustlers pitcher had a no-hitter, the Ol’Aces managed to score one run in the first inning off a passed ball and three in the third off errors.

The Hustlers also made it to the board in the first inning with Lizama’s triple driving Mark Tabora home. Lizama also scored off an Ol’Aces’ miscue and got another one in the second inning where the Hustlers opened an 8-1 advantage. The Hustlers gained three runs off passed balls in the second inning, one each from a stolen fish and sacrifice fly, and a base hit. The six other runs came off five more Hustlers’ booboos in the fourth and another passed ball in the third.

Falcons 12, Rockies 3

The Falcons joined the four-way tie for the lead after outclassing the IP&E Rockies (1-2) last Saturday.

Aven Evangelista started out for the Falcons, giving up only one run and two hits to lift the Falcons to their third straight victory. Evangelista also earned four strikeouts before leaving the mound in favor of Joel Norita in the fifth inning.

The Falcons managed to score 10-plus runs against the Rockies despite a slow start, as it capitalized on the Rockies erratic defense in the next two innings. The Falcons got four of their five runs in the second inning off the Rockiess miscues and continued to advance to bases in the fourth en route to a four-run output. The Falcons, who got into the board off Justin Canco’s RBI single, had two runs off passed ball in the fourth and one each off a sacrifice out and Evangelista’s base hit. Canco then ended what he started, blasting a two-run homer at the top of the last inning.

The Rockies answered with only two runs at the bottom of the last, failing to extend the match.

Meanwhile, results of the two other games over the weekend will be reported later this week.
