The CNMI Hindu Community’s Radha Krishna Temple in Chalan Kanoa was burglarized yesterday and about $2,000 in cash from a donation box and a gas cylinder were stolen.

Akhil Mollick, 36, assistant secretary of the CNMI Hindu Community, told Saipan Tribune that one of their members discovered the break-in when he went to clean the temple at 10am.

Mollick said police were immediately called.

“We feel very sad as this is the first time to happen with our temple in 12 years,” he said.

The donation box, which has never been opened for three years, was inside the temple.

Mollick said the office room was also burglarized, but they don’t know yet if items were also stolen.

The CNMI Hindu Community, which has 100 members, has requested the Department of Public Safety to solve the burglary and if possible, include the area during their routine patrol.

The temple is located near the Sister Remedios School. It was built in 2001.

Mollick said he believes that the burglar or burglars used a ladder or simply climbed over the fence as the padlock of the fence was still secure.

He said there were a lot of people at the temple last Thursday because of a festival.
