High surf warning ’til Sunday
The CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management issued a high surf advisory and small craft advisory yesterday to warn the public that Tropical Storm Halong is creating conditions unfavorable to swimming and boating in the next few days. It advises the public to stay out of the water.
The agency said that Tropical Storm Halong will generate swell and wind waves that will cause hazardous surf on Saipan and Tinian for the next several days.
The high surf advisory remains in effect until 6am Sunday. Hazardous surf of 10 to 14 feet is expected along south and west facing shores that will gradually subside to between 8 and 10 by Friday night. Surf will likely remain hazardous through the weekend as a west swell from Halong continues to affect the Marianas.
The small craft advisory remains in effect until 6am Friday. Halong will generate hazardous sea conditions for small craft across Marianas coastal waters through Thursday night.
South to southeast winds of 29 to 40 mph with gusts of up to 52 mph will diminish to between 17 and 29 mph across Saipan and Tinian waters. The highest winds will occur across Tinian waters.
Combined seas of 13 to 16 feet will steadily diminish to below advisory levels early Friday morning. Highest seas will be across western coastal waters of Tinian and Saipan.
Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in these conditions. If travel by boat is necessary, avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches especially those along all reefs as rip currents are life threatening. (PR)
