High surf, rip currents seen today
A high surf advisory will be in effect starting noon today, Sept. 3, 2020, and there will be a high risk for rip currents beginning noon today.
Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, surf will briefly fall below hazardous levels on west facing reefs by Thursday morning. By Thursday afternoon, another pulse of northwest swell will produce hazardous surf of 7 to 10 feet along west and north facing reefs. This will result in a high risk of rip currents in north and west facing reefs of Tinian and Saipan. This is expected to persist through the weekend, making for hazardous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.
The public is being advised to swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don`t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. (PR)
