High surf and small craft advisory
Based on information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center, a large swell from the northwest and northeast was producing hazardous surf along north facing reefs yesterday and hazardous surf will likely spread to west facing reefs by Friday.
A high surf advisory remains in effect until 6pm Monday, Aug. 24.
Hazardous surf of 7 to 9 feet along north facing reefs will build to 8 to 10 feet today. Hazardous surf will build Friday to 7 to 9 feet along west facing reefs. Hazardous surf will persist through the weekend.
A small craft advisory in effect until 6pm, also on Monday.
Winds will be 20 to 25 knots, with combined seas of 8 to 14 feet. These conditions will be hazardous for operators of small craft.
The general public is being encouraged to avoid boating in these conditions. If travel by boat is necessary, exercise caution especially near reef lines and when entering or leaving harbors and inlets. Avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches especially those along west and north facing reefs as rip currents will be life threatening. (HSEM)
