High surf advisory until 6pm today

A high surf advisory remains in effect in the CNMI until 6pm today, Wednesday. There is a high risk of rip currents through 6pm today.

According to the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, large west swells will continue to cause hazardous surf of 8 to 10 feet along west facing reefs through this morning. Surf is expected to fall below hazardous levels this evening.

Surf could briefly become hazardous again later in the week as west swell periodically increases from Tropical Depression 18W.

The public is advised to avoid venturing near reef lines and beaches, especially those facing west. Large breaking waves can knock you down and cause serious injuries. Strong rip currents will be life threatening. If you become caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current.
