High surf advisory issued for CNMI
The Homeland Security and Emergency Management office has issued a high surf advisory for the CNMI and it will be in effect until 6pm Friday, Sept. 25.
Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center, the waters around the Commonwealth will generate swells large enough to produce high surf and create conditions hazardous to small craft for at least the next several days.
Gov. Eloy S. Inos is therefore advising the general public to avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches, especially those facing north and east as rip currents will be life threatening.
HSEM said waves will be hazardous for operators of small craft. The public is also advised to avoid shoaling areas where long period swell can sharpen into large breaking waves. HSEM also reminded boaters that breaking waves can easily capsize even larger vessels.
HSEM said the CNMI should expect hazardous surf between 9 and 11 feet today, Wednesday. Aside from high surf advisory, a small craft advisory remains in effect until 6pm on Friday. (PR)
