‘Heavy rain damaged Tinian’s unpaved roads’
Many of Tinian’s unpaved roads were damaged by the excessive and heavy rains wrought by Typhoon Mawar last Wednesday and Thursday, worsening the state of these roads and creating even bigger potholes.
In response to Saipan Tribune’s request Thursday for information about the municipality’s initial assessment, Tinian information officer Melanie Cruz said the municipality’s Department of Public Works conducted minimal debris removal on all road obstructions around the island.
Cruz said that no facilities were damaged and there were no power or water interruptions throughout the Municipality of Tinian and Aguiguan on Thursday night.
Super Typhoon Mawar briefly made landfall Wednesday night in Guam, knocking down power lines and trees and creating a powerful storm surge. There were no serious injuries or major damage to Rota, Saipan, and Tinian.
At 5:30pm Thursday, Gov. Arnold I. Palacios issued an “all clear declaration for Saipan and Tinian. At 8:20pm Thursday, Palacios officially issued an “all clear” for Rota.
Cruz said there was no shortage on food supply as Tinian residents were able to stock up on supplies before the typhoon arrived.
Cruz said emergency equipment were all on standby, but were not utilized prior to or during the typhoon.
She said no immediate medical care was required as a few Tinian patients were sent up to Saipan on Monday morning.
She said majority of the island’s stores/supermarkets were open throughout the storm.
Cruz said there was no fuel shortage as residents were able to acquire fuel for generators and vehicles.
She said there was no shortage on food supply as residents were able to stock up on supplies before the storm came.
Only one shelter, the Tinian Elementary School cafeteria, was activated during the storm.
