As part of preparations for the start of the new school year in public schools this Aug. 16, officials and teachers of the Head Start and Early Head Start Child Care program went through a professional development training last Friday at Charley’s Cabaret of Pacific Islands Club Saipan.
The weeklong training focused mostly on the procurement process and its procedures.
“As part of our preparations, we undergo professional development training prior to school opening,” said Education Commissioner Cynthia Deleon Guerrero. “This is a calendared event and different topics are discussed.”
Head Start is a federally funded pre-school program that provides comprehensive services to eligible children and families on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota, while Early Head Start-Child Care Program intends to be of service to low income families with infants and toddlers to help them have access to a strong foundation in education.
Also in attendance on Friday was Board of Education vice chair Janice A. Tenorio, who said, “Head Start and Early Head Start deals with a lot of procurement processes in their programs, especially since they work with all public schools, administrative offices and external offices.”
The professional development training included other offices that work closely with the Head Start and Early Head Start program.
“Offices such as finance, the commissioner’s office, office of pupil transportation, administration offices were invited to attend the training as well,” Deleon Guerrero said.
Tenorio said, “This training is in line with the commissioner’s vision of transparency and empowerment. Transparency because she wants everyone involved and working together. And empowerment, for everyone to have confidence in the work that they do. This goes for everybody, from the key management to the teachers that are involved with the Head Start and Early Head start program.”
