The Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands reported 77.38 percent occupancy among 11 member hotels for May 2016, a 5-percent decrease compared to May 2015.

HANMI figures reports 55,506 of 71,734 available room nights sold in May 2016, compared to 58,487 of 71,393 available room nights sold over the same period last year. Room rates were $130.32 during the month, compared to $123.88 last May.

“Occupancy rates were lower in May 2016, mirroring the reduction in visitor arrivals, as well,” said HANMI chair Gloria Cavanagh. “Although Golden Week for the Japan market has not medaled in a long time, this year saw even worse decreases for the season.

This is just another reason why we should focus in developing new strategies for the already ailing market. In order to do this, we need all the funding that was earmarked for Marianas Visitors Authority. It is important to preserve the integrity of these funds. As our chairwoman of the MVA board said, we need money in order to make money.”

The Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands was established in 1985 as a professional forum for the hospitality industry of the NMI.
