SANTA RITA, Guam—The English department classrooms at Southern High School will now enjoy the benefits of technology upgrades thanks to the generous donation of computer systems which were presented by the Guam Air National Guard.

The Guam Air Guard’s contribution of 52 Hewlett-Packard Desktop Computers, valued at approximately $25,000, will assist the students in writing and research as well as in meeting their technology goals in the classroom.

Maj. Gen. Benny M. Paulino, The Adjutant General for the Guam National Guard, said he was pleased to see the computers that were slated to be turned in to the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office be put to good use at schools instead.

“Computer knowledge and use is a critical skill for today’s world. To be able to equip our children with these working computers that were being replaced, is a win-win situation, helping our education system, and assisting in the learning and development of our children,” Paulino said.

School principal Rosalin Meeks was overwhelmed with the donation and thanked the National Guard. She also pointed out that English teacher Patricia Duenas and assistant principal Geraldine Pablo worked with the National Guard through the Computers for Learning program to make the donation a reality.

“It’s nice to have been selected because the southern schools are often forgotten. We really appreciate all the work they did to not only donate computes, but ensure that they were all overhauled and loaded with updated and working operating systems. They did a lot for the students and the school and for that, we are very grateful,” said Duenas.

Present for the donation were Southern High School faculty members, teachers and students as well as representatives from the Governor’s Office and members of the Guam National Guard. (PR)
