Guerrero: Police presence lowers crime rate

Share

Public Safety Commissioner Robert Guerrero attributes the decreasing number of arrests in the past weeks to police presence in villages.

He said that DPS has been pushing its community programs, including the Community Policing Program, to station more officers in villages

Guerrero said that this has proven to be successful as weekly arrest reports have shown a significant drop.

“Police presence in the community is a deterrence. With more presence in the community, people are hesitant to do things they’re not supposed to be doing and our police officers are more aggressive in looking at what is going on in the community,” he said.

According to DPS’ latest arrest report, the CNMI Department of Public Safety responded to 62 calls on Saipan and made eight arrests this past weekend.

In the previous weekend arrest report, police were dispatched to 60 different calls; the department also made eight arrests.

The weekend prior, DPS was dispatched to 80 calls; the department made 14 arrests.
