According to tournament coordinator Lydia Tan, four to six players are participating in the junior singles and doubles events, while six to eight may enter the adults singles and doubles contests. She added that Eddie Wu of Hong Kong may also return to Saipan to join the annual tennis tournament.
Wu has been playing in the Tan Holdings Tennis Classic since 2013. Last year, he teamed up with Guam’s George Lai in beating Saipan’s Ken Imaya and Joe Quitugua in the men’s over 40 doubles finals, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
This year’s Tan Holdings Tennis Classic will still be played for two weekends with Week 1 running from Nov. 27 to 29 and Week 2 taking place from Dec. 4 to 6. Matches will be played at the tennis courts of Fiesta Resort & Spa (main headquarters), Kanoa Resort, Hyatt Regency Saipan, and Pacific Islands Club. The American Memorial Park tennis courts, which hosted Tan Holdings Tennis Classic games in the past, is unavailable this year due to the damage it sustained from Typhoon Soudelor last Aug. 2.
The opening week of the competition will feature matches in the junior singles and doubles in the U10, U12, U14, U16, and U18 age groups. A co-ed mini tennis for 10-and-under players will also be held in Week 1.
Registration for the opening week is ongoing and deadline for submission of entry forms is on Nov. 20. Draws will be posted by Nov. 23. Entry fees are $20 for singles and $15 per person in the doubles.
In the second week, the events lined up are men’s and women’s 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, and over 40 singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Deadline for registration is on Nov. 27, while draws will be available by Dec. 2. Interested players who wish to play in doubles, but do not have a partner may indicate in the registration form that they are looking for one.
Entry forms are available at the TSL Foundation office on the second floor of JP Centre Building in Beach Road Garapan, Tan Holdings office at TSL Plaza, also in Beach Road, and at Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan through tennis pro Luke Beling.
