Guam non-profits get $461,181 from DOJ

WASHINGTON, D.C.-Guam Delegate Madeleine Z. Bordallo announced yesterday that the U.S. Department of Justice has awarded $461,181 in federal financial assistance to local non-profit organizations.

The Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Agana was awarded $250,000 through the Transitional Housing Grant Program.  The funds will be used to provide holistic and victim-centered housing services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking victims and their children.

The Guam Coalition Against Sexual Assault & Family Violence was awarded $211,181 through the Grants to State Assault and Domestic Violence Coalitions Program. The grant will assist GCASAFV provide culturally appropriate curriculum-based activities to support families, especially children, exposed to domestic violence or victims of sexual abuse.  The funds will also be used to help develop initiatives to support underserved communities.

“The grants received today will help to improve services in Guam for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence,” said Bordallo.  “Catholic Charities and the Guam Coalition continue to work to protect and serve the most vulnerable in our community and these funds will assist them in carrying out their mission. I commend Catholic Charities and the Guam Coalition for their efforts to obtain these funds, and I look forward to their implementation.” (PR)

Parsons scholarships for UOG pre-engineering students

University of Guam pre-engineering students who have completed ES201 Engineering Statistics or who are enrolled in the course for the fall 2011 semester are encouraged to apply for a Parsons scholarship. Parsons, a construction and engineering firm, generously contributed $15,000 in scholarship funds to support pre-engineering students at the University of Guam. There are several Parsons Scholarships available for the fall 2011 semester worth up to $3,750 each. The scholarships will be awarded in October based on academic performance and financial need. Scholarship amounts will vary depending on financial need.

To apply for the Parsons Scholarship you must be a resident of Guam or the region and submit the following documents:

1. Application form (Download from http://www.uog.edu/../../admin/assetmanager/images/financial%20aid/parsonsscholarshipapplicationform2011-2012.doc)

2. A one-page personal statement about yourself and your academic goals. In the statement explain why you are pursuing a degree in engineering.

3. A copy of your official transcripts

All documents must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office located in the UOG Field House by 5pm on Oct. 14, 2011. (UOG)
