BARRIGADA, Guam—Staff Sgt. June Owen was named the Guam Army National Guard’s Recruiting and Retention Battalion’s non-commissioned officer of the year for 2019.

Throughout the year, she recruited more than 20 individuals into the Guam Army National Guard to serve the island and nation, exceeding her goal by more than 30%.

“I’m so grateful to be named the local recruiter of the year,” she said. “Competing against recruiters who are awesome at their job, and who I respect, is such an honor and I am proud to be part of such an elite team.”

Owen enlisted in the Guam Army National Guard on July 28, 2011, as a horizontal construction engineer, or 12N, assigned to the 1224th Engineer Support Company. She was tasked as a financial management technician with the Guam Army National Guard Element before moving to the Recruiting and Retention Battalion in August 2018.

“Staff Sgt. Owen believes in the Guam Army National Guard, so motivating her to go out and recruit was not hard at all,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Ronald Brantley, Guam Army National Guard’s Recruiting and Retention Battalion command sergeant major. “Her professionalism with fellow soldiers, leaders and the community, especially with her assigned school, increased our visibility on the island.” (PR)
