Guam awarded $301,529 for sex offender management
HAGÅTÑA, Guam—Delegate Madeleine Z. Bordallo (D-GU) announced yesterday that the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking has awarded Guam a $301,529 grant.
The Guam Judicial Branch was awarded the money to run the Support for Adam Walsh Act Implementation Grant Program.
This grant will assist the Guam judiciary to develop and enhance sex offender registration and notification programs. The $301,529 will also help the Guam courts implement the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, or SORNA, and protect the community from sex offenders through a national system for the registration of offenders.
The Guam judiciary will enhance SORNA by implementing guidelines for sex offender treatment, building capacity for the Guam SORNA team, digitizing records, and expanding the database while working with local and federal partners. The Guam judiciary will take the lead to educate stakeholders and establish a formal, structured range of sex offender treatment.
“I look forward to seeing these funds put to work by our judiciary and improving our community’s safety. This grant from the U.S. Department of Justice provides critical federal assistance to Guam to monitor sex offenders,” said Bordallo. “The Guam Sex Offender Registry is an important tool to keep our community safe and informed. These funds will also help fully implement the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act and will make Guam a safer place for our families to live.” (PR)
