Guam aims to donate to Yutu relief during Hot Pepper festival
Members of the Guam community aim to donate $10,000 to Tinian’s Super Typhoon Yutu relief efforts during its annual Hot Pepper [Pika] festival.
According to Guam Sen. Will Castro, it is currently in the works, but members of all municipalities in Guam are adamant about raising $10,000 or $10,000 worth of relief goods for Tinian’s post Yutu relief recovery efforts.
“In response to Super Typhoon Yutu, we put together a small team in the spirit of One Marianas. We had three boat missions to bring relief goods to Tinian, which as we all understand, irrefutably was the hardest impacted by Super Typhoon Yutu,” he said.
Castro said 10 boats are expected to arrive on Tinian on February, just in time for the festival, carrying Guam’s mayors and its relief donations.
“From [Feb.] 15-17 we’re going to bring 10 boats out from Guam with 10 Guam mayors…and $10,000 that’s our goal and we’re going to try and reach that goal,” he said.
Castro said that the boats will also carry members of the Knights of Columbus who will aid in the rebuilding of Tinian’s domestic church.
“In a follow up to that, there are commitments by various members of municipalities and members of the Guam community to come back and we hope to come with three-fold…we’re looking at 10 mayors, we’re looking at other members of the Knights of Columbus to come and help rebuild the domestic church by bringing the spirit of cooperation in the name of One Marianas back to Tinian and then to the CNMI,” he said.
The annual Tinian Hot Pepper Festival will be held on Feb. 16 and 17 and is open to the entire CNMI and Guam community.
