GSM Masters, Old Stars prevail

The GSM Masters and Old Stars downed their respective opponents in the 2016 Masters Baseball League at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Baseball Field.
The GSM Masters topped Rubak last Monday, 20-13, while the Old Stars defeated Papa Bears in similar scores last Wednesday.
Walter Macaranas, Mark Flores, and Juan Diaz had two RBIs apiece to lift the GSM Masters to their fourth win in six games. Jack Diaz and Tom Diaz chipped one RBI each. Flores added three runs off his 3-for-6 performance at the plate, while Tom Diaz also contributed three runs. Ben Hocog was only 2-for-4 at bat, but led the GSM Masters in runs with his four, while Zack Igisomar was the third GSM Masters player to make three runs against Rubak.
The GSM Masters hit 18-for-49 at the plate for a .367 batting average. They were behind, 8-10, after four complete innings, but grabbed the lead at the top of the fifth after registering eight runs. Rubak countered with only one run at the bottom fifth to face an 11-16 deficit.
Rubak failed to recover after being shut down in the sixth and drilling only two runs in the last inning. Rubak had a runner stranded at third base when it was called for the third and final out at the bottom of the seventh with Tony Rogolifoi heading back to the bench off a 4-3 putout play.
In last Wednesday’s game, the Old Stars rallied past Papa Bears after hitting their targets in the last three innings.
The Old Stars were down 5-9, after three and a half innings but fought back and stole the win after tallying six runs each in the fourth and fifth inning and adding three at the bottom of the sixth. Jess Mesa had a two-run single in the fourth and made an RBI single in fifth. The Old Stars had eight earned runs in the fourth and fifth inning.
Mesa went on to finish with four RBIs and contributed three runs off his 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Jun Pangelinan logged three RBIs and hit 3-for-4. Randall Aguon was on 2-for-4 at the plate, but recorded three runs and two RBIs.
