PDM Promoters had one final monthly cleanup last Monday, Aug. 16, just before the school year started.
Cleanup coordinator Sonia Siwa said Saipan Awaodori Team members now have a sense of commitment in taking part in the cleanup since they’ve been doing it for quite some time.
“We did the cleanup before the school starts so the kids will have time to prepare for their school. Our children are having fun while doing the volunteer cleanup. They feel they have a sense of accomplishment and are happy doing it,” she said.
Despite the absence of tourists due to the lack of international flights arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, there is still plenty of trash to pick up along Paseo de Marianas and its surrounding environs, Siwa said.
“Empty bottles, cans of sodas and beers, cigarettes butts, bits of plastic, Styrofoam, and face masks are the most frequently littered items we find in the area. There were also metals with sharp edges and pieces of glass that are not just unsightly but can be dangerous and may injure passersby,” she said.
There was even trash thrown on the empty flower pots at Paseo de Marianas, according to Siwa. “We are asking the cooperation of the public not to dispose of their trash anywhere.”
In all, a total of 20 members of Saipan Awaodori Team and seven staff from Kinpachi Restaurant collected 720 lbs of trash during their 9am-11am cleanup around Paseo de Marianas, Coral Tree Avenue, AMP Road, and its connecting alleys last Monday.
PDM Promoters’ monthly cleanups are held every Saturday and are supported by the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality and the non-profit’s major sponsors, T-Galleria and TSL Foundation.
Siwa said T-Galleria and TSL Foundation’s support enables them to have the cleaning materials needed for their cleanups. Kinpachi Restaurant provides the meal and snacks for volunteers.
Volunteers of PDM Promoters will be at it again in September when it conducts its next monthly cleanup of 2021.
