Anthony Gregoire bagged the first semis berth in the boys U14 singles event in the SIS Student Council Tennis Tournament.

Last year’s CNMI National Junior Team member took only two sets to reach the semifinals after sweeping Dylan Mister, 4-0, 4-1, last Saturday at the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan tennis courts. Up next for Gregoire is the winner in the lower draw match between David Kwon and Andrew Chung, who were scheduled to collide yesterday, but their tiff, along with the games in the other divisions were rained-out and had to be reset to next weekend.

Also entered in the boys U14 singles event are Daniel Kang, Daniel Dam, Danny Lee, and Jun Wang.

In other results, Helen Kim also coasted to victory in the opening day of the inaugural tournament. She played in the round-robin girls U14 singles and eased past Irin Chung, 4-1, 4-2. Kim will be gunning for the division crown against Serin Chung, who also needed only two sets to beat her sister, Irin, last Saturday, 4-1, 4-0.

In the girls U12 singles, Savital Sikkel notched the third semis berth in the division after pulling off a three-set victory over Hoo Wang. Sikkel dropped the opening set, 1-4, but stole the win after sweeping the last two, 4-2, 5-2. She was scheduled to challenge Dana Lee in the semifinals last Saturday, but results of their Final Four match were unavailable as off press time. Lee automatically moved into the semis at the upper half of the draw after getting a bye in the opener.

At the lower half, Irin Chung also took a bye and will face in the other semis pairing the winner in the Jin Hee Woo-Anna Kwon game.

In the U16 novice doubles, three pairs secured Final Four tickets last Saturday.

Gillian Villagomez and Cole Chambers showed the way to the semis after eking out a 3-4, 4-0, 5-4 victory over A.J. Hudkins and Brian Kim. Mauryzon Tybaco and Kun Nishimura followed suit after eliminating Bryan Lee and Guine Borja, 4-1, 2-4, 5-3. Alex Park and Junhee Lee made short work of Andy Cho and Junbum Huh, 4-3, 4-0, to clinch the third semis ticket in the division.

The fourth and last Final Four slot will be contested by the pairs of Mark Nam and Mac Guintu and Michael Lee and Grace Choi.
