In an effort to expand athletic opportunities for students, the administration of the Marianas High School has announced the addition of grappling as an MHS Dolphins Olympic sport. Grappling, which involves various forms of wrestling and submission techniques, will provide a new outlet for students to showcase their physical prowess and competitive spirit.

The decision to introduce grappling was made after careful consideration by school officials, who recognized the growing popularity of the sport both locally and nationally. MHS hopes that by offering grappling, it will attract a wider range of students who may not have been interested in more traditional sports like football or basketball.

To ensure that the sport is conducted safely and with proper technique, the school has invested into procuring experienced referees and trainers from local mixed martial arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy Trench Tech Purebred Saipan.

Students have also received briefings on the general rules of the sport to ensure safety as well as training in the school-based MMA club.

The sophomore team, led by Lincoln Manibusan, emerged as the ultimate champions in the 16-team bracket, with Manibusan going undefeated throughout the competition. It’s worth noting that seniors Uriel Woodruff and Miles Borja took second and third place, respectively, while freshman Devon Reyes and junior Jhos Lunzaga claimed fourth and fifth place.

With the introduction of grappling, MHS continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing diverse and inclusive athletic opportunities for all students. (PR)
