Grandvrio Resort junior chef Richard Meimban won the Chinese Style Beef-themed chefs’ competition on the final night of the 21st Annual Taste of the Marianas International Food Festival & Beer Garden last Saturday.
Meimban brought home the $500 cash prize as well as gift certificates from Triple J and Imperial Pacific International (CNMI) LLC.
Meimban was the second-place winner in last year’s chefs’ competition. He came back stronger this year, beating off five other competitors for the top prize.
Coming in second place was Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan’s Vicente Montoya and third place went to Kanoa Resort’s Maria Pua.
The other competitors were Norman Chan from Hyatt Regency Saipan, Manny Pancha from Pacific Islands Club Saipan, and Ezekiel Quiroz from Tony Roma’s.
The competitors were judged based on taste, presentation, creativity, and use of local ingredients.
The judges were Cha Cafe’s executive chef Joe Guerrero, IPI executive chef Haisong Chen, and Shark Fin Restaurant’s executive chef and Chinese Association representative Tzu Ming Sheu.
The organizer of the competition, Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands representative Samson Tan, who is also the Grandvrio executive chef, gave thanks to “everyone who extended helping hands.” The other chefs who organized the competition were Benjamin Babauta, Roland Fitz, and Zenn Tomokane.
The competition capped the celebration of Tourism Month in the CNMI.
