Govt paychecks released today

Finance Secretary Larissa Larson issued a memorandum yesterday to advise government employees that payroll checks will be released today—a day earlier than the usual schedule.

The Finance chief stated in the memo that the “disruption of technology has had a significant impact on the processing of direct deposits to all our CNMI government employees.”

“However, we have implemented contingency plans to ensure payroll for today is on time. As part of our contingency plans, we printed payroll checks last Friday and printed supplemental checks on Monday,” Larson, in the memo, said.

She also expressed appreciation to the Bank of Guam and other partner banks for their assistance during the past few days.

“I expect normal operations for direct deposits by next payday,” she said.

On July 14, Larson suspended direct deposits of payroll checks as a communications outage continues to affect the Commonwealth.

“Until the technology issues are resolved by IT&E, all direct deposits of payroll checks will be suspended. The Department of Finance will be issuing paper checks to all CNMI government employees until further notice,” she earlier wrote.

The Finance chief also urged the early submission of payroll documents.

She earlier described the impact of the outage to her department as “very significant,” adding that the outage caused delays in drawdowns of federal funds and also severely affected the department’s reporting activities, among other things.

She said the outage compelled the department to manually process some 1,500 checks for government employees who then had to rush to the bank to cash the checks.

Government employees normally get their salaries and wages via direct deposit into their bank accounts.
