Govt on time with utility bills
Despite anticipated government revenue losses after Typhoon Soudelor, the local government has been on time with its utility bills, according to administration and utility officials.
Commonwealth Utilities Corp. chief financial officer Matthew Yaquinto told Saipan Tribune yesterday that the central government and the Public School System are “good” on payments, confirming a report from an administration official that the government is current.
The exact figures of payments were not made available as of press time.
There are some $2 million in back payments owed from previous years, but the administration has been making payments since the typhoon. They pay some $5.2 million in utility payments a year.
Yaquinto also said the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. has also been current, paying $150,000 a month.
Meantime, the Inos administration did not yet have dollar figures accounting for the “hit” Typhoon Soudelor had on the economy, when asked for the information.
The CNMI Department of Finance is looking at government revenue points such as revenue tax, customs fees, and business license fees to crunch out a larger number detailing the impact to the economy.
