Goods donated to Houston
A total of 16 boxes packed with almost 800 lbs of canned goods, ramen, mosquito coils, and hygiene items were airmailed to Houston, Texas last week, according to a statement from Rep. Edwin K. Propst (Ind-Saipan).
The goods collected were from a two-week Hurricane Harvey Relief Drive initiated by the offices of Reps. Vinson Sablan (Ind-Saipan) and Propst and several members of the community.
The drive also raised a total of $3,277.83 in monetary donations, of which $1,709 was used for shipping.
“After we were devastated by Typhoon Soudelor, our fellow islanders in Texas quickly came to our aid, with four representatives from [the Houston Association of Mariana Islanders] flying in and personally delivering several boxes of supplies and aid for our people, as well as shipping in clothes and other items a few weeks later. We wanted to do what we can and to show our gratitude, as we can never forget their kindness,” said Sablan.
According to Propst, HAMI officers Joaquina DLG Chong and Jennifer White Aguon already received the 16 boxes of goods and monetary donations and have already distributed them to families in need of help.
“They are most grateful and wanted to thank everyone in our community for their love and support for our fellow islanders in Texas,” said Propst.
