The CNMI Fishers Forum hosted by the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council at the Hibiscus Hall of the Crowne Plaza Resort Saipan on Monday drew over 100 participants throughout the night visiting the information tables and attending the presentations on bottomfish in CNMI waters.

Present during the forum were Gov. Arnold I. Palacios, former representative Christina Sablan, representatives of government agencies, different organizations, young adults, fishermen, and others.

“I think it’s a good turnout. A lot of people wanted to come out and showcase some of the work that they do, whether it’s in their office, or in their company, or in their association,” said Michael Tenorio, who is the Fisheries Section supervisor at the Division of Fish and Wildlife, Department of Lands and Natural Resources. “It’s nice to see kids here. We›ve got to educate the youngsters, and them being exposed to these events acclimates them to understand issues.”

Information tables present were the Division of Environmental Quality of the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality; Sea Turtle Program of the Department of Lands and Natural Resources; DLNR Division of Fish & Wildlife; Division of Coastal Resources Management; bottomfish demo by Tony Guerrero; Micronesian Environmental Services; and the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council.

The council meeting on Saipan convenes fishery agencies and fishermen to discuss fisheries management in the offshore waters of Hawai‘i, American Samoa, Guam, the CNMI, and the Pacific Remote Island Areas.

Upon the council’s arrival last March 24, they held meetings at the Crowne Plaza and online. The council is going to Guam next to hold a series of meetings there as well.
