Golden Racquets beats Alamo/Armatech

The Golden Racquets prevailed in its first assignment in the 9th Annual Traders Insurance Badminton Team Tournament after outclassing the Alamo/Armatech-sponsored United Badminton Club, 33-12, last Friday at the TSL Sports Complex.

After the close results on Court 1, 13-11, in favor of the Golden Racquets, the eventual winning club dominated the Court 3 matches, 20-1, to down the Alamo/Armatech. The Golden Racquets recorded sweeps (3-0) in the women’s BB, men’s CC, and women’s BC doubles, and men’s A, B, and C singles games on Court 3 and a 2-1 triumph in the women’s CC doubles. Players are awarded 3 points for a sweep and 2 for the match that went to three games with the loser earning 1 point.

Roxanne Soriano and Myla Vicencio played the lone extended match on Court 3. The Golden Racquets pair won in the first game of the women’s CC doubles tiff, 21-17, while Miles Rodriguez and Alyssa Velasco recovered in the second, 23-21. The deciding third game was another tight duel with Roxanne and Myla slipping past their Alamo/Armatech rivals, 21-18.

In the women’s BC doubles, Vicencio had a different partner in Alma Ortega and they defeated Velasco and Nicole Malasarte, 21-12, 21-19. Ortega also played in the women’s BB doubles and she and Rowena Sison topped Malasarte and Lucelle Lampera, 21-18, 21-12.

Ortega’s husband and son—Joel and A.J.—were on the winning side, too, of their respective matches. Joel edged Mhar Dela Cruz in the men’s B singles, 21-17, 21-9, while A.J. had a similar straight game victory over Jerome Malasarte in the men’s C singles, 21-14, 21-6. The Golden Racquets went on to complete its domination of the men’s singles matches last Friday after Almond Edralin beat Andreau Galvez in the A division, 21-19, 21-11.

In other results on Court 3, A.J. teamed up with Ric Brien in winning over Malasarte and Don Castillo in the men’s CC doubles, 21-15, 21-15.

On Court 1, Alamo/Armatech drew first blood with Dela Cruz and Patrick Fielded defeating Joel Ortega and Jerry Ebuenga, 21-17, 21-15, while Nathan Guerrero and Nicole Malasarte made it two in a row for UBC following their 19-21, 22-20, 21-18 triumph over Joel and Alma Ortega in the mixed AB doubles.

The Golden Racquets then got its first win in Court 1, thanks to Merlie Savellano and Joey Algenio’s 21-5, 21-9 victory over Jeff Candelario and Ella Soriano in the mixed CC doubles. The Golden Racquets also prevailed in the men’s BC doubles as Robin and A.J. Ortega made short work of Fieldad and Malasarte, 21-18, 21-12.

Alamo/Armatech returned to its winning ways in the mixed BC doubles with Guerrero and Rodriguez topping Noli Santos and Roxanne Soriano, 21-14, 21-14, while Nicole Malasarte handed UBC another victory after downing Sison in the women’s B singles, 21-14, 21-15.

In the other women’s singles game, Villavicencio swept Patricia Abantao, 21-15, 21-14, while Edralin and Anna Rose Omori managed to give the Golden Racquets the slim lead at the conclusion of the Court 1 matches, 13-11, as they dominated Guerrero and Malou Malasarte in the mixed AB doubles, 21-17, 21-12.

Meanwhile, Alamo/Armatech also played last Saturday against Shirley’s and results of the pairing will be reported later this week.
