GMI Market, GMJ/IKKI top foes
GMI Market and GMJ/IKKI Wholesale downed their respective foes in the 2015 San Antonio Community Action Network Basketball League last Tuesday night at the San Antonio court.
GMI Market defeated Ferrera Builders, 97-85, in the U18 pairing, while GMI/IKKI prevailed over Erika’s Catering/Ferrera Builders in the masters division match, 76-69. Both winners took control of their games in the second quarter en route to topping their opponents.
After hanging on to the 20-18 advantage at the end of the first period, GMI Market made it a baker’s dozen lead in the second frame, 48-35, behind the combined efforts of June Alipio, Jethro Cruz, N-Nes Siech, and James Kintaro. Alipio scored 7 points in the second canto, Cruz chipped in 5, while Siech and Kintaro contributed 4 apiece, as GMI Market recorded their most output (28) in a quarter.
GMI Market continued to play a balance offense in the second half to notch its third win in as many games. It won its debut against the Sonics, 79-72, and then downed Judith’s Warriors, 86-77.
Ferrera, on the other hand, absorbed it second straight loss after a 2-0 start.
In the masters division, GMJ/IKKI is unbeaten in two games after foiling Erika’s/Ferrera’s comeback bid.
GMJ/IKKI seemed to coast to victory when it led by 10, 73-63, with about a minute left in the match. However, it let its guard down, allowing Erika’s/Ferrera (2-2) to move within four, 69-73, 31 seconds to go in the game. Dante Tabora had two baskets in Erika’s/Ferrera’s short 6-0 rally, while Rodney Catalla hit the other field goal.
Tabora then had a chance to bring the deficit down to 2 when Fradel Sedillo missed a baseline jumper, however, the former fumbled a fastbreak pass from Catalla, returning possession to GMJ/IKKI. Henry Litulumar was fouled on the other end and nailed his first free throw before muffing the second, while GMJ/IKKI regained the leather as Art Montes and Tabora battled for the rebound and the latter touched the ball last before it went out of the baseline. Montes did the inbound and fed Sedillo for a point-blanked shot that sealed the deal for GMJ/IKKI.
GMJ/IKKI settled for a 7-point winning margin after nearly wasting a 14-point advantage at the end of the first half, 39-25. It built a twin-digit lead in the second quarter with Sedillo, Robert Guiang, Joel Saplan, and Allison Dizon combining for 20 of their 23 markers in that period which began with GMJ/IKKI ahead by only a deuce, 16-14.
Sedillo ended up top-scoring for GMJ/IKKI with his 23 points, while Catalla paced Erika’s/Ferrera with his 22.
