Grace Christian Academy 1 swept Mt. Carmel School in their make-up game yesterday to remain unscathed in the middle school division of the 2018-2019 Commonwealth Coalition of Private Schools Association Volleyball League.
The Eagles defeated the Knights in the first set by double digits, 25-10, before having a harder time clinching the victory in the second, 25-20. GCA 1 went on to complete the sweep after coasting to a 15-2 win in the third set. The Eagles-Knights tiff was originally scheduled last Sept. 11, but was suspended due to rain.
With the triumph, GCA 1 has beaten all its opponents in the league and the streaking squad improved its record to 8-0.
Before its rescheduled game against Mt. Carmel, GCA 1 dueled Saipan Community last Wednesday and also earned the outright win after taking the first two sets of their match, 25-13, 25-8. The Eagles victory snapped the Tsunamis’ three-game winning streak.
Meanwhile Agape Christian School 1 and GCA 2 also squared off in a make-up match yesterday with the former prevailing in straight sets. Agape 1 now has a 6-2 mark, prevailing in three of its last four matches and moving back to second place in the team standings. The complete rankings are unavailable, as other teams have yet to turn in results of last Thursday’s games.
Today, the league will have a four-match schedule with the winless Agape 2 hosting Mt. Carmel in the 3:30pm match. At 4:30pm, Agape 1 will take on Seventh Day Adventist, while the two other games will have GCA 1 facing GCA 2 in Navy Hill and Saipan International School battling SCS at the Geckos court in As Lito.
The co-ed middle school competition is on the second round of the double-round robin regular season and teams at the bottom four must start picking up wins to avoid getting paired against higher-ranked squads in the playoffs.
After the regular season, the No. 1 finisher will be pitted against the last placer, while other pairings are as follows: No. 2 vs No. 7; No. 3 vs No. 6; and No. 4 vs No.5. The playoff round is scheduled to start on Oct. 16 and format is single elimination. The four teams that will survive the first round will play in the semis matches on Oct. 17, while the finals is set for Oct. 18.
