The Garapan Basketball League-IT&E Cup’s inaugural season will kick off on Oct. 16 at the Garapan Basketball Court.
Ten teams have already shown interest in joining GBL’s first season, however only nine will make up this year’s field, so the first nine to pay the $500 entrance fee will be allowed to compete. Squads participating in the league must have players who are at least 18 years old and each team can only have a maximum of 14 players on its roster.
Currently, the list of interested teams include NMC-Proa, Satbahi, Ali’i Konflikt, Mobil, Hoopaholics, Rollers Basketball Club, Ol’Aces, Cabalen-Noni, Blue Haus, and a team led by Boy Garcia.
Besides the trophy, the champion team will receive $1,000 cash, while the league will also hand over various individual awards and other prizes.
“We’re aiming to showcase the GBL as Saipan’s premier outdoor basketball competition. Moreover, by choosing the Garapan court for our venue we also plan on conducting a variety of civil service activities as a way of giving back to the community. Some activities include holding lawn maintenance and landscaping along the Garapan Fishing Area, hosting beach clean up, and assisting Rollers Basketball Club head coach Joe Diaz with his youth U16 developmental basketball program,” said head organizer Rey Perez in a phone interview yesterday.
Perez, who organized the first two seasons of the QQ Car Rental Basketball Cup, would like to thank IT&E for supporting the inaugural GBL.
Meanwhile, league organizers are holding an 8pm mandatory meeting for all interested teams on Monday, Sept. 19 at the Hard Rock Café in Garapan.
