After more than two months of steady fuel prices, Mobil Oil Marianas broke the streak yesterday with a 15-cent increase, with the CNMI’s other fuel supplier, Shell Marianas, expected to follow suit today.

Mobil’s Extra fuel increased from $5.119 per gallon to $5.269 per gallon. Mobil’s Supreme fuel also increased from $5.569 to $5.719 and diesel increased from $5.439 per gallon to $5.539 per gallon.

Although competitors, Mobil Oil Marianas and Shell Marianas typically mirror each other’s price movements.

The last change in fuel prices was seen on May 9 when gas prices rolled back a total of 20 cents in a span of less than a week.

The CNMI last saw an increase in fuel prices on April 7 when it went up to $5.41 per gallon from $5.26 for regular gasoline.

Local motorists shared their dismay about the increase.

A 59-year-old woman said it was a good thing she gassed up her car just a couple of days ago before the unexpected increase. “It’s been a while that gas prices went up or down and I’m glad I was able to buy gas before it went up, but I’m still disappointed that it went up again, considering it’s been a while since the last change. I hope it goes down again soon enough,” she said.

A 27-year-old man said, “here we go again. I hope it stays at this price for a long time again or at least roll back soon. I just hope it doesn’t reach $6 like the last time.”
