Garapan Elementary School swept Koblerville Elementary School in the finals of the 2019-2020 Public School System Interscholastic Volleyball League last Saturday at Oleai Sports Complex.
The Mallards dominated the Umangs in two sets, 21-13, 21-8, to clinch the elementary title (co-ed fourth and fifth grade) and complete their undefeated season. The champion team has Claude Ruben, Aiden Camacho, Adrian Bravo, Elisa Yleisa, Ericka Zandueta, Jovien Magofna, Marlin Chang, VikcyShen, Alvin Saimon, Romeo Aldan, and Preston Ngiramos on its roster, while the squad is coached by Paul Salalila and Walter Mendez.
Garapan, which earned a 9-0 record in the regular season of the 10-team tournament, did not drop a set in the single-elimination playoff round. The Mallards also swept Kagman Elementary School in its first game in the playoffs, 21-7, 21-15, to move to the semis of the upper half of the bracket.
In the semifinals, though Garapan needed only two sets to eliminate William S. Reyes Elementary School, the former had to work doubly hard to avoid the latter’s upset bid. In the first set, the Mallards pulled off a 21-20 victory. Garapan went on to oust the Kingfishers and advance to the finals with a 21-16 triumph in the second set. WSR, before bowing to Garapan, downed Grace Christian Academy 2, 21-17, 21-18, to notch a Final Four berth at the top half of the draw.
At the bottom half, Koblerville reached the finals after eliminating Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School and Oleai Elementary School. Against GTC, the Umangs posted a 21-14, 21-17 win, while versus the Turtles, Koblerville had a tougher time in two sets, 21-19, 21-18. Oleai marched into the semis after topping GCA 1, 21-16, 21-18.
