Garapan Fishing Base’s parking area is paved
Using close to $89,000 in federal funds, the parking area of the Garapan Fishing Base is now paved and is capable of holding up to 11 boat trailers at a time.
The Department of Lands and Natural Resources worked with the Department of Public Works as the contractor of the project.
According to DLNR Secretary Anthony G. Benavente, the project was funded through a federal grant that specifically funds the development of parking areas for boat trailers.
Acting DPW Technical Division director George C. Sablan said they got the notice to proceed with the project on June 7, 2017. The contract gave them 60 days to complete it.
According to Benavente, the parking area was completed on July 4 but the vision is to connect the parking area to Beach Road so that the entire area is smoothly cemented for the convenience of fishermen.
Benavente feels that the completion of the project will lessen congestion in the area.
The entire project cost close to $89,000, according to him.
A fisherman who agreed to speak yesterday said that paving the base’s parking area is a good idea as cars and boat trailers are usually scattered all over the area and accidents are prone to happen. He feels that, with the new parking area, it is now easier for fishermen to organize themselves and their trailers.
The Garapan Fishing Base is one of the most popular sites on Saipan. It is not just a boat ramp. It is also the location of the weekly Thursday Market and other annual festivities and serves as a source of revenue for many fishermen.
