Fund board faces lack of quorum

The NMI Retirement Fund board will soon lose its quorum as the terms of two trustees will expire consecutively this week.
Fund counsel Viola Alepuyo said in Monday’s meeting that one board trustee’s term will expire on Thursday, May 3, while the other will expire the following day.
This was in response to retiree Donna Cruz, who attended the meeting and had asked about the status of the Fund’s board membership.
Alepuyo said they have inquired with the Executive Branch and were informed that the two trustees will be re-nominated by Gov. Benigno R. Fitial.
Besides the anticipated re-nomination of the two trustees, Juan S. Torres has also been nominated to the Fund board. Torres, if confirmed, will serve the unexpired term of Francisco P. Rosario, which will expire on May 7, 2015.
“But even if he was to be confirmed, we’ll still be short by at least one trustee,” said Alepuyo.
At present, the Fund board has three trustees: board chair Bernadita C. Palacios, who represents Tinian; Marian DLG Tudela, representing Saipan; Nacrina Barcinas, representing Rota; and vice chair Adelina C. Roberto, representing women’s interest on the board.
Alepuyo also disclosed that former Fund board chair Sixto Igisomar’s nomination was withdrawn from the Senate last Friday, the 90th day since he was nominated by the governor.
A Senate committee has recommended rejecting Igisomar’s re-appointment following the governor’s controversial “stupid” remark in reference to Tinian and Rota senators.
